Transgender Vs “Real” Bias - Amanda LePore and Sophia LaMar v. Twilo

Thomas D. Shanahan, P.C.…

In 2001, I had the privilege of representing Amanda LePore and Sophia LaMar against their former employee, the nightclub Twilo in New York City.  At that time, Twilo was the biggest and most popular nightclub in New York City.  LePore and LaMar were fired by Twilo and its management and were told the reason was they “wanted to hire real women”.  LePore and lar Mar are transgendered and sued.  Two years later, the matter was about to go to trial when Twilo closed.   A trial judge issued a decision in favor of LePore and LaMar after an inquest in the amount of $150,000.00.    The case parallel tracked legislation in the New York City Council which ultimately passed to amend the New York City Human Rights to include protections for transgendered workers.
