At-Will Employment

In New York, New Jersey and Florida, employment is at will. This means that unless there is an agreement for a specific term of employment, either the employer or employee can terminate the relationship at any time, for any reason. You could resign or be fired for any reason.

There are exceptions. In some cases, there may be an agreement that states how long the employment relationship will last. Another exception is that the employer can terminate only if there is "just cause." Finally, even if there is no formal employment contract, other documents could be interpreted to be a contract.
